01 Mar 1956, Kosti, Sudan --- A woman prisoner stands in chains at the barracks prison in which 194 persons died at Kosti, Sudan. The mass deaths followed the cramming of 285 prisoners into one room and were believed caused either by food poisoning or asphyxiation. The prisoners, all cotton farmers, had been arrested three days before in a riot that grew out of their refusal to deliver their cotton crop to a marketing company at Kosti. --- Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS |
